Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
